Big Relief for Haryana Farmers: Govt Extends Tubewell Electricity Bill Payment by 6 Months

In a major decision, the Haryana government decided to give much-needed succor to farmers reeling under floods and heavy rains: extending by six months the payment period for tubewell electricity bills of about 710,000 farmers of the state. The government would continue to supply electricity without disruption during the period. It has also refused to levy late payment surcharges on farmers.

Discount on Electricity Bill Payments

Under this scheme of the Haryana government, electricity bills for agricultural tubewells will be paid after six months starting from July 2025 to December 2025. For instance, the bill for July will be paid in January 2026, that for August in February 2026, and that for December in June 2026. No late fees will be charged from electricity consumers during this period.

Financial burden to be borne by Government

The Haryana government will bear the financial burden on electricity corporations under this relief scheme. This decision shall help farmers recover from losses caused by floods and heavy rains during the monsoon season and restore agriculture.

Impact of Floods and Heavy Rains on the Agricultural Sector

The unpredictable rains and floods in the districts of Karnal, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kaithal, Panipat, and Fatehabad badly damaged the crops this year. Paddy, sugarcane, and vegetables bore the brunt of the loss. As rivers and streams continued to flow above the danger mark, the waterlogging in the fields persisted, causing huge losses to the farmers.

Extension of Electricity Surcharge Waiver Scheme

Meanwhile, the Haryana government has also extended the electricity surcharge waiver scheme till November 11. Under the scheme, domestic and agricultural consumers would be entitled to 10 per cent rebate and 100 per cent waiver on the surcharge. Industrial consumers would get a 50 per cent surcharge waiver on payment of the principal amount. People whose electricity connections have been disconnected can also avail of this scheme to restore their connections.
